Waste Tracking
B3 Benchmarking supports full tracking of waste, with the same flexibility as energy and water tracking plus features specific to waste management.
Waste can be tracked in four main categories: trash, recyclables, organics, and donations/reuse. Within these, specific materials can be defined. Mixed Use types are the default but can be changed at any time. Many materials include weight conversion factors for volume-based entries.
Waste is stored in pounds but can be entered in other weight units (tons, kilograms, metric tons) or volume units (gallons, cubic yards, liters, cubic meters). For volume-based entries, weights are calculated automatically using the Waste Itemizer tool.
The Meter Editor supports fees and taxes across all meter types. For waste meters, these can be broken down into contamination and miscellaneous fees. Each row typically represents a bill or invoice—often weekly or biweekly pickups, possibly from multiple bins. For more detailed tracking, the Waste Itemizer can record multiple bins or pickups per billing period. Optional entries include bin size and percent full; weight is calculated from average material-specific conversion factors.
Once 12 months of data is available, B3’s full reporting capabilities can be applied. Five dedicated dashboard widgets display waste data, including landfill diversion metrics.
Waste baselines can be set to track changes over time.
B3 integrates with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, including its 87 waste material source types and disposal destinations. Currently, no modeled B3 waste benchmark or peer rating is available.
The Visualizations and Improvements tabs offer templates and tools for reporting by type, unit, or time period. Import/export tools now support waste data, including columns for taxes, contamination, and miscellaneous fees, plus a dedicated Waste Itemizer export.
Waste tracking is an add-on subscription and may not be enabled for all users.
