Advanced Building Attribute: Arrangement
Within the building editor on the Details → Advanced tab, you can define the arrangement of each space asset area. Arrangement describes how a space is positioned in relation to other spaces—whether it is vertically stacked, internally hosted, or placed side-by-side (adjacent/grade). (Adjacent/grade is the default.)
Adjacent/Grade
The space shares one or more walls with another space at the same level (ground or upper floor) rather than being above or below it. These shared walls reduce the amount of building envelope exposed to outdoor conditions, which can lower heating and cooling loads compared to fully exposed spaces.
Stacked
The space is located directly above or below another space. This arrangement shares horizontal surfaces (floors and ceilings) between levels, which influences heat transfer between stories. In multi-level buildings, stacked spaces may benefit from thermal stability if the spaces above and below are conditioned similarly.
Internal
The space is entirely enclosed within other spaces, without any direct exposure to exterior walls, roofs, or ground. These spaces typically have very stable indoor temperatures because they are insulated from outdoor weather by surrounding conditioned areas. Internal spaces often require less heating or cooling energy but still depend on ventilation and lighting to maintain comfort and usability.
By correctly setting the arrangement, you help ensure that your building’s simulated performance is realistic and that your benchmarking results better reflect true operating conditions.
